17 17 was a good year everyone had a good time except, of course, the time we sank into the flats along the bank we never really meant to be that late it's just that time seemed longer then we chose to sink instead of swim until we caught the windy rogue and learned to levitate 17 was a good year everyone had a good time remembering when first we held the chains & rattles, reigns & bells shaking out the winter from our eyes we never thought we'd get that close all we wanted was some of those vague impressions that we'd carry through our lives 17 was a good year everyone had a good time just steer around the wreckage now where everyone kept blacking out leaving us in moments all alone no waiting for the dawn to come averting eyes from all the ones who kick and scream and block you when you fly everyone had a good time -11/17/03 (based on fall 2000 sketch)

Hey Old Man 05:04
HEY OLD MAN paint a picture of a lovely day or a rhinestone in a foot of snow cross the deep end, affix a gaze on the stars, they're falling on the clouds below like skippin' stones on a salty lake or going dancing in a summer rain like holding hands underneath the rays of a clear day's sun, i'm on my feet again hey old man, look at me i'm not as blind as i pretend to be old man look at me a loss for words, a mental picture tells a million little things we'd never say a quaint vibration, a glance, a stare show me more than all your words could anyway these little moments, to stop and stare to soak in everything we'd ever find these little moments, they're everywhere underneath, between, around, above, behind hey old man, look at me i'm not as blind as i pretend to be old man look at me hey old man cover up my bones... -11/17/03 (based on a Spring 2001 sketch)

WHO DO YOU THINK? Who do you think you’re talking to? I’ve got my mountain now Spitting words to tiny ears Who do you think you’re talking to? My table is empty now Take your things and go, my friend Who do you think you’re talking to? Who’s silence is golden now? Crooked words bring crooked tears Who do you think you’re talking to? I won’t change I can’t change I can change You know it’s not my time of season Who grows, growing in the dark? Waiting only for a reason Leaving only for a spark Or something else to bide our time Who do you think you’re talking to? These eyes have grown weary now Staring at the sun all day Who do you think you’re talking to? You’re one in a billion And timing, babe, is everything Who do you think you’re talking to? What good can I do you now? You made your bed, now sleep my friend Who do you think you’re talking to? I won’t change I can’t change I can change -Summer 2000

Spiral 05:37
SPIRAL i should have spent the night more wisely instead of wasting all my time deconstructing lucy and trouble on my mind i could have slammed the door behind you or laughed at strangers in the dark but i caught you making coffee and that same old tired, withering remark i could have shined the light more closely instead of waving at the west and though my hands were always shackled i couldn't stop at second best i could have closed the gates to dreamtown or swam in rivers filled with gold but i dropped the keys behind me and that same old line is getting rather old i could have lied and said i cheated you you know you always had your way through all the lines that i delivered i never thought i'd find the time to say... i feel the earth behind me i saw her spiralling away and though my body's not the air is growing colder everyday be still, the earth behind me send me down - my feet are off the ground -11/21/03 (based on a Summper 1999 sketch)

about

Chris Anderson's 14th full-length album.

In the summer and fall of 2003, I was deep into the writing and recording of five very distinct albums. The main project at hand was a very important album that was to be called The Crown. Other songs from those sessions were to make up the album, Waiting For The Wolves. Every so often, however, I liked to shake things up by recording some older songs, stuff that had yet to be tackled. A huge trove of songs that were originally written between 1999-2001 were recorded, and those eventually were split into two albums as well. While the Sun Moon Star album centered around songs that had been performed by my band, Ebb, this album features songs that were written at that same time but left on the shelf, for one reason or another. The 5th album was a collection of some of my more "classic" older songs, updated for that particular era.

Like the Nine Miles West album before it, and so many albums that came since, the point of this set was to look back to a particular era of my songwriting, record new versions of the songs that fit with what I was doing at the time, and fashioning them into the album that could (or should) have been. While those albums aren't as exciting as some big creative project, they are just as rewarding. There is nothing better than making sense of things.

I can't say I remember too much about the recording and the sequencing of this album but I do recall the excitement I felt every time I uncovered one of these old songs and gave it the "modern" treatment (much like what I have been doing the last few years, in a different setting). While I am sure all of these songs, at one point, had been considered as songs to bring to the band, none of them had ever been worked out. Some of them had originally existed as rough sketches, so new lyrics and arrangements were crafted during these sessions, and some of these songs turned out quite good. To this day, however, only one of these songs, "Bristol", has ever been performed live and only a couple of these have been properly recorded. They will all get their turn. Until then, dig this set.

Oh yeah, the cover was drawn with crayons in about ten minutes, right before I took the art to the printers. I have no idea what is going on there but I think it's cool.

Lastly, the title. Several years prior, during the time that Ebb was turning into a real band, I solicited friends and colleagues for ideas on what to name the band. My great pal Rust Rudolph crafted a list of well over 100 potential names, many of which were fantastic (and all of which were rejected by the band). Among those was redlightgreen (it may have been stylized as Red Light Green but whatever). While the name didn't fly with the band, there is an improvisation on a tape that used that as a title and it always sat in my head as a title to be used later. Since these songs date from around the time those lists were crafted, it only made sense to use it for this album. Thanks, Rust!

about

Chris Anderson Alexandria, Virginia

I made my first album in 1992 and I just can't quit. This site collects what came before my recording style changed in 2008. These are the records that shaped and guided me to the music I make now. Often flawed, always right. Newly remastered, with tons of bonus tracks, this catalog is my life story. A musical memoir in real time, ragged and as rough as I.
