17
17 was a good year
everyone had a good time
except, of course, the time we sank
into the flats along the bank
we never really meant to be that late
it's just that time seemed longer then
we chose to sink instead of swim
until we caught the windy rogue
and learned to levitate
17 was a good year
everyone had a good time
remembering when first we held
the chains & rattles, reigns & bells
shaking out the winter from our eyes
we never thought we'd get that close
all we wanted was some of those
vague impressions that we'd carry
through our lives
17 was a good year
everyone had a good time
just steer around the wreckage now
where everyone kept blacking out
leaving us in moments all alone
no waiting for the dawn to come
averting eyes from all the ones
who kick and scream and block you
when you fly
everyone had a good time

BRISTOL
i've seen the lights
they're falling over
oh, those ribbons in your eyes
we're stumbling and tumbling
crawling through those
tunnels where you hide
and i can see
what's going on inside
all in all
you're taken for a ride
sad sister, don't be cross
it's only me
i'm waiting for the toss
to stand for reckon's tide
or drift along the
funnel where it's wide
and i can see
what's going on inside
all in all
you're taken for a ride
those bristol lights
they're falling over
all those ribbons in your eyes

Hey Old Man

|

HEY OLD MAN
paint a picture of a lovely day
or a rhinestone in a foot of snow
cross the deep end, affix a gaze
on the stars, they're falling
on the clouds below
like skippin' stones on a salty lake
or going dancing in a summer rain
like holding hands underneath the rays
of a clear day's sun, i'm on my feet again
hey old man, look at me
i'm not as blind
as i pretend to be
old man look at me
a loss for words, a mental picture tells
a million little things we'd never say
a quaint vibration, a glance, a stare
show me more than all your words could anyway
these little moments, to stop and stare
to soak in everything we'd ever find
these little moments, they're everywhere
underneath, between, around, above, behind
hey old man, look at me
i'm not as blind
as i pretend to be
old man look at me
hey old man cover up my bones...

CIRCLES IN THE SAND
i draw the only ace
or run the only race
around you
it's not that hard
to understand
they're only circles
in the sand

4000 Leaves
04:16
|
|||
4000 LEAVES
i scaled this dusty road
2 years have come to blows
we're kinda moving slow
4000 leaves, they're falling
from every tree
they flutter wild and free
collected, piled in me
they smell of her, i break
4000 leaves of honor
4000 leaves of gain
4000 leaves to want her
4000 leaves of pain
4000 leaves of anguish
4000 leaves of pride
4000 leaves to tarnish
4000 leaves to hide
away...
i've turned the pages back
to twist in ages black
can't take it back
i waste 4000 leaves
to make up for all the pain
no sense in thinking of
the ways to rise above
just circumvent that love
4000 leaves of wonder
4000 leaves of rage
4000 leaves of summer
4000 leaves to gauge
4000 leaves to reckon
4000 leaves i spied
4000 leaves to beckon
4000 leaves to hide
away...
i've spent my time here thinking
about my time spent drinking
i throw another shot
and it's only just a game
that i've never played
these ropes i wear, my service
they press against my chest
they hold me here for certain
4000 leaves to anger
4000 leaves confound
4000 leaves i've named her
4000 leaves the ground
4000 leaves of nothing
4000 leaves insane
4000 leaves of something
4000 leaves of strain
4000 leaves to blow me
4000 leaves they fly
4000 leaves below me
4000 leaves they die
4000 leaves to fix it
4000 leaves to shy
4000 leaves to nix it
4000 leaves to fly
away...

Who Do You Think?
04:49
|
|||
WHO DO YOU THINK?
Who do you think you’re talking to?
I’ve got my mountain now
Spitting words to tiny ears
Who do you think you’re talking to?
My table is empty now
Take your things and go, my friend
Who do you think you’re talking to?
Who’s silence is golden now?
Crooked words bring crooked tears
Who do you think you’re talking to?
I won’t change
I can’t change
I can change
You know it’s not my time of season
Who grows, growing in the dark?
Waiting only for a reason
Leaving only for a spark
Or something else to bide our time
Who do you think you’re talking to?
These eyes have grown weary now
Staring at the sun all day
Who do you think you’re talking to?
You’re one in a billion
And timing, babe, is everything
Who do you think you’re talking to?
What good can I do you now?
You made your bed, now sleep my friend
Who do you think you’re talking to?
I won’t change
I can’t change
I can change

Spiral

SPIRAL
i should have spent the night more wisely
instead of wasting all my time
deconstructing lucy and trouble on my mind
i could have slammed the door behind you
or laughed at strangers in the dark
but i caught you making coffee
and that same old tired, withering remark
i could have shined the light more closely
instead of waving at the west
and though my hands were always shackled
i couldn't stop at second best
i could have closed the gates to dreamtown
or swam in rivers filled with gold
but i dropped the keys behind me
and that same old line is getting rather old
i could have lied and said i cheated you
you know you always had your way
through all the lines that i delivered
i never thought i'd find the time to say...
i feel the earth behind me
i saw her spiralling away
and though my body's not
the air is growing colder everyday
be still, the earth behind me
send me down - my feet are off the ground

Sleep With The Fishes

SLEEP WITH THE FISHES
yer gonna sleep with the fishes
yer gonna catch my wish
it's all said and done
you didn't hear what i said
for all - yer done in
you need to loosen up the naps
on yer nappy head
and cut loose instead
yeah, yer done in
go to sleep in a sea
full of bubbles
tread no anger red
now yer done in
on the banks, baby
good as dead
yer gonna sleep with the fishes
yer gonna catch my wish
it's all said and done
whoa - la la la la
you gotta sing for yer supper time
whoa - la la la la
you drew the joker from a deck of nine
whoa - la la la la
i drank you dry with a twist of lime
whoa - sha la la la
now i'm done, i hope ya had a good time
yer gonna sleep with the fishes
yer gonna catch my wish
it's all said and done
remember the day when you
walked in the door
and pretended to say
that you loved me no more
but i saw that your eyes
they were closed
and your fingers, they were twisting
like a rose
next time that i see you
things won't be the same same
i might even have a different name
but you know what i said
that day when the world
fell and settled upon
my ill, rattled head
i never really loved you
but i liked your style
i never really loved you
but i liked your style
i never really loved you
but i liked your style
don't come over now
don't come over now
i never really loved you
but i liked your style
i know i said i'd walk miles and miles
but you know it was just a ruse
i didn't think that you'd buy it
now what's the use?
yer gonna sleep with the fishes
yer gonna catch my wish...

Chris Anderson Alexandria, Virginia
I made my first album in 1992 and I just can't quit. This site collects what came before my recording style changed in 2008.
These are the records that shaped and guided me to the music I make now. Often flawed, always right. Newly remastered, with tons of bonus tracks, this catalog is my life story. A musical memoir in real time, ragged and as rough as I.
